Joining the Harvard Ambulance Service

The Harvard Ambulance Service is looking for dedicated members who are ready to serve the community of Harvard and practice high quality, prehospital emergency medicine. The Harvard Ambulance Service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and this allows us to be flexible and accommodating of almost any schedule.

Why should I join the Harvard Ambulance Service?

  • Professional, Volunteer Service: HAS is an entirely volunteer run organization that prides itself on providing high-quality, professional pre-hospital care. HAS members are paid a stipend for each call they respond to.

  • Great Training: HAS members have the opportunity to do 10+ hours of training each month, so it’s easy to keep your skills up.  This includes M&M rounds from two different hospitals, our own monthly training, and cross-training with other services in the area.

  • Diverse Team: Your HAS teammates include physicians, flight nurses, paramedics, teachers, engineers, students, authors, businesspeople, retirees and other cool people.

  • Interesting Cases: HAS only performs 911 response, not interfacility transports. This means EMT’s get to use their skills on every call.

  • Reasonable Call Load: HAS runs an average of one to two calls a day, which is a perfect pace to practice your skills without a full time commitment.  You will not feel the burden of working as a full-time EMT which can often include 10 calls a shift and the associated stress, physical exertion, and paperwork that accompanies that career.

  • Flexible Scheduling: You can set your own duty schedule around work, school, and your personal life. The Harvard Public Safety Building has great internet and cell coverage, so while on duty, many HAS volunteers use their time to study, work on their full time job, do conference calls, and otherwise conduct business as usual.

NOTE: At this point, we are focused on recruiting from our primary response area and the towns immediately surrounding it. We are affiliated with the town of Harvard MA, in Worcester County, not Harvard University.
